The word trauma has become very widely used in pop culture and people understand it to mean different things. Here’s the definition I use: Trauma is anything that exceeds your nervous system’s ability to cope either because it happens too fast, too intensely, or both.


The more obvious types of trauma include life-threatening events like: sexual abuse, physical abuse, or being in combat/war zone. However, trauma also includes events that aren'‘t exactly life-threatening but have threatened your sense of self and safety.
